Yahoo is shutting down Yahoo Maps. The demise of Yahoo Maps comes amid increasing competition in the digital mapping space.
“We made this decision to better align resources to Yahoo’s priorities as our business has evolved since we first launched Yahoo Maps eight years ago,” – Architect Amotz Maimon Yahoo Chief.
Yahoo isn’t killing off its mapping technology entirely, though. Maimon said Yahoo would still use Yahoo Maps “in the context of Yahoo search and on several other Yahoo properties including Flickr.”
Google Maps has long been the dominant force in the digital mapping space, while Apple continues to bake new functionality into its own mapping service. Meanwhile, Nokia is reportedly looking to sell its mapping division.
